Will Google come to Sri Lanka ?

Today I came across through Google Job Openings page that there are four job openings in South Asia, which included a position for Sri Lanka Country Consultant. For these positions Google doesn’t mention an exact location, only mentions This position is located in South Asia. This sounds like Google is going to open up a new South Asian Regional office apart from the one’s they have in India. What is more exciting is opening up a position for country consultant only in Sri Lanka (not in Pakistan or Bangladesh). Is this signify a possibility of seeing a Google office in Sri Lanka ?

Sri Lanka was noticeable to Google than any other SA country in recent past, thanks to events like Google SoC and ApacheCon. Who knows that they may see Sri Lanka as a potential market ? There are already local SME’s using Google Adwords and more importantly Google may see huge market for their future products such as Web Office and Google OS in developing countries like Sri Lanka.

So how important for us to have Google in here ? There will be so many benefits such as the infrastructure development and the recognition. Also Google is a major supporter for the FOSS community and FOSS will be the key for countries like us in the coming future. So having a Google representation will be a catalyst for local FOSS community.
Let’s hope to see Google in Sri Lanka and many many Sri Lankan Engineers in there….

I believe that Google would recognize our country as a high potential talent in growing FOSS community. As now the demand being bias towards more FOSS based application, the base for investing for a development centre in Sri Lanka getting established.
This is a thing many of the tech community are looking forward for.

This is pretty darn good news..hope they will come
  • That opening has been there for almost a year now I think.

I am a SEM and I heard that their plans are currently on hold due to the situation in the country. If things clear up, yeah, Sri Lanka should look really good to Google - atleast in terms of a development centre as opposed to viewing us as an untapped market.

The IT job market is quite good here so the skill level is high. With the command of the English language also quite high, it will be something to look forward to.

If Google come to SL.. I wonder what kind of internet line they will use in their office. 64kbps line for 270$ per a month form Suntel OR 512k line form SLT for 1600$ per month..
